Life on Sawtooth Sunset Ranch - New Book Remembers Author's Childhood Growing Up on New Mexico Ranch

SAN ANGELO, Texas, Oct. 14, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- It wasn't long ago that the Wild West was tamed. The settlers of the early 20th century blazed the land in newly founded New Mexico, building homes, herding sheep and putting up fences. Although life was hard, author Naomi Wadsworth still holds fond memories of her childhood on the ranch, which she relates in her new book, Sawtooth Sunset Ranch: Payne-ful Reminiscing (now available through 1stBooks).

Wadsworth takes readers back to her childhood in 1940s and 50s New Mexico. Ranches had just recently become successful, and life for Wadsworth's family, the Paynes, was hard on the Sawtooth Sunset Ranch. Located outside Roswell, N.M., the ranch offered a demanding life. She details her parents' difficult times before she was born and explains how many families struggled desperately just to survive. By the time the author was born, however, not much remained of the hard conditions her family endured. Still, she writes, life on the ranch wasn't easy.

"(T)o concentrate on only the drawbacks of this unique existence would be tragic, for (I) have memories of great wonderment and joy too. Hardly a day has gone by since, without some thought being given to the life-altering experience," Wadsworth says.

Along with the work of running a ranch, her childhood was colored by glorious sunsets, exploding in orange and pink in the wide blue expanse of the western sky; brilliant rainbows; fields of wildflowers; and dazzling starry nights. She calls these memories back in her new book. Her love for this remote ranch resonates through the work.

Sawtooth Sunset Ranch is a dazzling piece of nostalgia and a valuable record of history of the everyday hardships and joys experienced by the brave early ranchers who tamed the desert.

Wadsworth now lives in Texas. Sawtooth Sunset Ranch is her first book.
