GOTEBORG, Sweden, Oct. 20, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Volvo Buses (Nasdaq:VOLVY) (Other OTC:VOLVF) (Other OTC:VOLAFK) has won an order from the Australian state of New South Wales for 60 bus chassis. The buses will operate as part of Sydney's public transport system. The first chassis was delivered for bodybuilding in September, and delivery of all 60 buses is estimated to be completed by October 2004. The total value of the order is SEK 123.4 million.
Volvo won the order in a public procurement tender for the State Transit Authority (STA) in New South Wales. The order is the second from the STA to Volvo in a short space of time - at the end of 2002 the authority ordered 30 bus chassis which are in service in the city of Newcastle. "These orders reflect our commitment to a cleaner, safer and more reliable system for public transport", says Joe Tripodi, Parliamentary Secretary, for the New South Wales Ministry of Transport.
The 60 buses for Sydney and the 30 delivered to Newcastle are all based on Volvo's B12BLE chassis - low-entry buses that offer passengers very good comfort. Volvo's 12-litre DH12D engine fulfils the environmental requirements of Euro 3. "The order from the STA is yet another sign that we have a very good product in the Volvo B12BLE. Since its introduction in July 2001 we have received almost 200 orders in Australia on this chassis", says Simon Bath, head of Volvo Bus Australia.
The chassis in the latest order for Sydney are being bodybuilt by the local company Custom Coaches. The first chassis was delivered for bodybuilding in September, and delivery of all 60 buses is estimated to be completed by October 2004.
