NCC receives contract from Botniabanan worth SEK 175 million

SOLNA, Sweden, Oct. 28, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- NCC Construction Sweden has been commissioned by Botniabanan AB to construct a new station area and a new ski-jumping hill in Ornskoldsvik. The order is worth SEK 175 million.

The assignment includes construction of the new station area, plus industrial tracks and railway bridges in central Ornskoldsvik. The contract comprises terracing work for the station area, which will be conducted for two railway tracks: the main track and a 1,200-meter-long industrial track for the Alfredshem industrial park, as well as connections from the Mellansel track to the station location. The station will have two platforms with a total length of 700 meters.

The project also includes construction of a new 90-meter ski-jumping hill in central Ornskoldsvik and a deceleration zone for the hill. NCC has previous experience of the construction of ski-jumping hills and has built four smaller ski-jumping hills in the area in the past year.

The assignment also includes the demolition of a railway bridge over the current deceleration zone for the ski-jumping hill and of old locomotive depots in the area to be used for the industrial track. Construction of the industrial track will require extensive work on lines. In addition, a number of service routes and more than 300 meters of retaining walls for platforms will be constructed.

Work will commence at the end of November and the project is scheduled for completion during November 2005. About 50 persons will be employed in the project.

"We are extremely gratified to have been entrusted by Botniabanan to undertake this contract. The assignment is regarded as complex because the large ski-jump hill will have to be moved and blasted into the rock. The entire project will be built in a narrow and steep area along the mountain face, making it technically challenging. This is also a very important project because it will generate employment in the area," says Roger Ekman, Department Manager at NCC Construction Sweden in Umea.
