Secrets in the Jungle -- New action novel tells of girl raised in jungle

ALAMOGORDO, N.M., Nov. 3, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- What was to be a year long assignment in the thick Colombian jungle, turns out to be a 17 year ordeal for Ward Holland. While he is there, he and his wife have Harriet, who grows up to be a strong willed young woman, raised in the jungle. Her father's involvement in a massive, secret project there shapes her life and could bring its end in author Ethel Halstead's new novel, Sangre De Lobo (now available through 1stBooks).

When Ward takes an assignment to lead a team that is set to build an extensive airplane runway in the thick jungle, it proves to be a torturous affair as Ward, his young wife and their team are held captive by terrorists until their project is complete. After the runway is built, Ward is ordered to then drain a section of river to uncover a boat that sailed 20 years before. During this time, his wife dies, leaving him with a baby girl to raise. A local wise woman helps Ward raise Harriet, also known as Harry.

Inside the boat, two crates hold the key to an immortal life. Ward manages to smuggle his daughter and her caretaker to the United States before the crates are flown out. Upon arrival, Harry is turned off by the frivolous American life. When she learns her childhood friend is being held by terrorists in the village near her home, she returns to Colombia to free him. She is captured, escapes and is later involved in a gunfight. Will helping her friend get her killed? Can she escape from the terrorist camp unscathed?

An intense story of danger, terrorism and unconditional love, Sangre De Lobo tells of Harry, her strong spirit, her connection to the jungle and, most of all, her love for her family and friends.

Halstead is a native of New Mexico. The idea for this novel blossomed when her son told the story of a girl he met in the Philippines. Halstead is planning the publication of four novels in the near future.
