Teleca expands Obigo with Philips' Media Player for mobile phones

MALMO, Sweden, Nov. 20, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Teleca and Philips announced today that Philips' Media Player advanced multimedia software solution will be integrated with Obigo, Teleca's industry-leading application software suite for mobile phone manufacturers.

By integrating Philips' Media Player with Obigo, Teleca will be able to provide handset manufacturers with a state-of-the- art mobile video player that minimizes the system integration efforts and reduces time-to-market. The solution will allow service providers and network operators to offer their subscribers additional applications such as playback of downloaded or streamed video clips, video messaging and more. In addition, the mobile media player significantly improves the user's experience by providing video streaming and playback capabilities embedded in multimedia messaging (MMS) client and the browser.

Thanks to the architecture of the Obigo Framework, no further integration is required when adding more functionality. The Obigo Framework is designed to stimulate and promote innovation by offering Obigo licensees a wide range of pre-integrated and pre-validated technologies to reduce handset time-to-market and commercial risk.

Philips has developed a complete suite of multimedia software that fulfils the needs of handset vendors and ODMs who wish to integrate audio / video recording, playback and streaming in their products. This integrated product offering addresses all major media formats, including 3GPP- compliant H.263, MPEG-4, AMR, AAC, and MP3. Thanks to highly optimized implementation of media processing algorithms, the offering also addresses the requirements of the mobile phone market, both in terms of MIPS and code size. All ARM-based platforms are supported, including ARM7, ARM9, OMAP and XSCALE, while a thin OS abstraction layer ensures compatibility with most operating systems, ranging from popular names like Symbian, Smartphone, Nucleus and eLinux to more exotic ones.

"The integration of Philips' Media Player in Obigo underscores our vast experience and leading position in bringing digital audio and video technologies to market. Obigo licensees will effectively be able to implement an optimized media player software solution that will really bring their products to life," comments Hans Streng, CEO of Philips Software. "We are looking forward to working closely with Teleca and its licensees to help create innovative solutions for mobile multimedia and stimulate even greater demand for mobile phones based on Obigo."

Responding to this, Joakim Nydemark, Managing Director of Teleca Mobile Technologies AB, said: "Our cooperation with Philips will make our product portfolio even more comprehensive, and we look forward to building our relationship further. Obigo licensees will benefit from a short time-to-market to provide video media support, and consumers will be rewarded with an improved user interface experience."
