Country Joe, Psychedelic Rock Legend -- New Book Tells candid story about life of Country Joe and San Francisco music scene

CONCORD, Calif., Nov. 21, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- In a new book about Country Joe, leader of the 60s band Country Joe and The Fish, author Ron Cabral offers an emotionally charged and candid look at this rock legend's life. Country Joe and Me (now available through 1stBooks) follows Country Joe's days in the Navy to his memorable performance at Woodstock in 1969 that brought 400,000 fans to their feet.

Country Joe, who founded one of the most understated bands to fuel the influential San Francisco Haight Ashbury scene during the turbulent 60s, is a rock icon and a veterans' advocate. He served with Cabral in the Navy and later moved into the history of the psychedelic music scene. This captivating book shows these two young men from their youth in the military to their roles in rock history to their later family lives.

A wild ride that includes pivotal moments in rock and roll, Cabral's book includes details about Country Joe's music on and off the stage, his controversial and misunderstood reputation and the stories that only a rock icon can have. He writes of Country Joe's brief affair with rock legend Janis Joplin and his experiences teaching with such people as Bill Graham and Jerry Garcia at Cabral's alternative high school in San Francisco. A powerful glimpse inside the eye of the political, social and musical storm brewing in California in the 60s, Country Joe and Me is the first look into the life of Country Joe.

Cabral spent his career in the field of education. After 35 years as a high school teacher, dean, assistant principal and principal in both middle and high schools, he retired in 2001. In 1997 he founded a middle school of the arts and spent more than 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, retiring as a chief petty officer in public affairs. Cabral, an influential rock band manager in the 1960s, especially for the band Gold, is associated with a German record label that releases lost treasures of psychedelic music.
