Using Personal Experience to Understand Life -- Author stresses importance of independent thinking and influence of life experiences

ARLINGTON, Va., December 10, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- In his new book, author Ray LaPlante offers a simple message: a resounding and refreshing reminder that life is more than pre-packaged doctrines and expectations. Time to Come Home (Back to Common Sense) (now available through 1stBooks) captures LaPlante's idea: by thinking independently and forming one's own philosophies directly from experiences, one can attain unparalleled freedom.

He draws on his own vast experiences to illustrate his independent philosophy. A worldwide traveler, he has lived around the globe and has actively pursued the understanding of various cultures and beliefs. This book is "written to remind people to use their experiences to learn, enabling them to make their own choices and never let anyone or thing dictate what to think."

The author watched his friends follow advice they did not believe in; it appeared, he says, that they did not have the courage to listen to their own "will, intelligence and wisdom." People do have the ability to successfully decide their next move in life, he writes; however, too often, individuals give in to pressures thrust upon them and submit to beliefs they don't agree with. "The bottom line is to remain willing and ready to throw out all mental garbage if you disagree with it regardless of who in the universe has 'decreed' the garbage," LaPlante says.

Time to Come Home is not a technical book on philosophy or psychology. Rather, it is a straightforward account of the author's realizations, gathered through reflection on his life experiences. With basic wisdom and advice about living life to the fullest, LaPlante offers a direct, entertaining look at life when it's shaped by one's own perceptions.

Growing up in Maine, LaPlante always sought adventure. He found it when he volunteered to fight in Vietnam. Upon his return, he attended college, played as a drummer in several bands and made a living setting up equipment for famous musicians. Later, he returned to the Army and traveled around the world. He lived in the Far East, Europe and Hawaii. He currently resides in Virginia.
