The World Turned Upside Down -- New Book Examines History of Democracy in America

COLUMBUS, Ind., December 10, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- When the colonists triumphed and the British conceded defeat at the Battle of Yorktown, no American band was available to play at the ceremony. The British band played at their own surrender. Today, the song they played is the title of a new book on revolution and democracy, The World Turned Upside Down: The Advent of the American Revolution (now available through 1stBooks), by Fred Meyer.

"The American Revolution has continued to be alive to the causes of freedom. Since its adoption, the Constitution has never failed the cause of human rights worldwide. This issue of human rights is alive and well. Today, the United States of America stands as a beacon throughout the world for freedom," Meyer says.

The World Turned Upside Down chronicles the development of the principles of revolution starting with the Declaration of Independence to today. When colonists won their freedom from England, it sent shockwaves throughout the world, which are still being felt in the contemporary world. Meyer examines democracy in America and includes the processes by which Americans have determined the direction of the nation since its inception. From the Constitution through the 2000 presidential election, the book takes a detailed look at the shaping of America.

The World Turned Upside Down is more than a history of America and democracy; it is an anthology of the very fabric of freedom.

Meyer has been a part of the ups and downs of political organizations and candidates. He has been a precinct worker, an elected participant in his party's state convention and an elected city councilman and has participated in gubernatorial campaigns. His successful business career included 36 years with Arvin Industries, from which he retired as vice president of public affairs. The World Turned Upside Down is his first book.
