The Negative Side of Independence -- Author tells independent women why they can't or will not maintain relationships

CHICAGO, Jan. 8, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- The last 40 years have brought significant progress in the independence of women. They are more financially secure, more confident and in control of their own destinies. So why do so many have problems having successful relationships? One man, K. B. Lewis, attempts to tell women what they are doing to hinder loving relationships in his new book, Millennium Women: Why Their Independence is Failing Them in Their Relationship and How to be Empowered (now available through 1stBooks).

"Society sold women half of the pie when they told them to become independent. They only gave them the positive side of independence," Lewis writes. "However, when it comes to relationships, the negative side of independence is the silent, unaware destroyer of the relationships."

Although they are successful in managing their personal affairs and creating successful careers, independent women seem to be battling problems they are not aware of, he writes. The nature of independence means separation, while the nature of a relationship means togetherness. The two ideas contradict one another. This brings about control issues and creates mixed signals and confusion that can spoil a potentially successful relationship. Many famous names illustrate this point, Lewis writes, including Hillary Clinton.

Lewis offers advice to women on how to maintain loving relationships while remaining independent. He offers a workbook section that asks women personal questions about what they're looking for in an effort to help them pinpoint problems and help them conquer the negative side of independence.

Lewis has studied relationships for five years. He holds a master's degree in psychology and is currently pursuing a doctorate.
