The Glories of the Pucker Factor -- New Book Offers Sweet and Sour Mixed Memories of Vietnam

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla., Jan. 8, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Pucker Factor (now available through 1stBooks) is defined as a reaction to fear or an alarming event. However, it is also a new book of memoirs, by Daniel C. Webster, that recounts, through 34 romping chapters, why he liked Vietnam.

"The Pucker Factor is what happens to someone who is totally afraid, surprised or unsure of the very near future. When someone has The Pucker Factor, the muscles of the rear portion of the body tenses and tightens. The greater the fear, surprise and uncertainty, the greater the factor will be," Webster says.

He had much to be nervous about, but also endured a lot of good times in the fiery jungles of the late 1960s. The Pucker Factor: A Noncombatant's Vietnam Memoirs recalls his 19 months in South Vietnam with the military. From Bien Hoa to Can Tho to Soc Trang, Webster traces through the jungle, remembering the zany antics of soldiers and the moments of fear that he laughed about later. Webster was an Army Reservist with a wife and small child when he decided to return to active duty. Leaving his family behind, he went to fight for his country, but ending up fighting for his life and the lives of the soldiers he came to consider as brothers.

The Pucker Factor is a frothy sweet and sour mix filled with intoxicating and intoxicated stories. From boosting steaks and lobster tails from General Westmoreland's unattended chopper to divorce letters from his wife, Webster's stories run the gamut of experiences. He flew into "VC land" more than 30 times, drank a plethora of days away, served as military photographer, had a love affair with a beautiful widow, befriended a local bar girl trying to sell him "Saigon Teas" and got a complimentary night with a prostitute from three Taipei pimps looking for "a lesson in human nature" to improve business.

The Pucker Factor will have readers wiping their eyes and busting their guts with laughter as Webster gives his original firsthand account of a Vietnam that wasn't all bad.

Better known by his Vietnam nickname, "Duke," Webster has published numerous military articles. The Pucker Factor is his first book. He is now a retired Army Sergeant First Class living out his golden years in the panhandle of Florida where he works as a fulltime security guard. He and his Korean wife, Suk Cha, love to do a little bit of fishing and a lot of relaxing.
