Like many during the Depression, Glady was hungry and desperate. She married because of this desperation and soon had children before she knew what it was to live as an adult without hunger or other depravities. An extremely complex woman, Glady's resentment about the way her life had unfolded results in her blaming others. Terror, abuse, vulgarity, depression and sadness fill their family life.
She never views herself as an abusive parent, and her perceived notion that others have more resources at their disposal always frustrates her. Her self-serving and manipulative ways make her control her family in an abusive and neglectful way.
Set in Middle America, Lilacs and Glady follows this woman through life during the 1920s to the early 1990s. It is a story of a woman caught in her own web of resentment, blame and selfishness who manages to offer bits of humor throughout the novel. Though she spends her life wishing for something better, she unknowingly makes her family members' lives much worse.
Hope grew up during difficult times on the Great Plains. Her love of reading stemmed from her family's lack of television and radio. She earned a Master of Science degree and spent many years teaching in a university setting.
