Emulex Award-Winning InSpeed Technology Shipping in New Xyratex SBOD Storage Enclosure

InSpeed Technology Used to Create Switched Back- end Architecture in Xyratex's RS-1600-FC-SBD Storage Subsystem

COSTA MESA, Calif., Jan. 19, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the world leader in Fibre Channel host bus adapters and provider of intelligent building blocks for the storage networking industry, announced today that Xyratex Storage Systems has deployed Emulex's InSpeed SOC 320 in its newly announced RS-1600-FC-SBD storage enclosure. Emulex's 20-port InSpeed 2Gb/s SOC (Switch-On-a-Chip) was used by Xyratex to create an "SBOD," or "Switched Bunch Of Disks," application that brings high performance switched connectivity to each individual drive within the storage enclosure. Xyratex is the first storage company to make an InSpeed SOC 320-based storage enclosure commercially available. The new RS-1600-FC-SBD storage enclosure was formally launched today by Xyratex and is available to storage OEMs and system integrators worldwide.

InSpeed Technology improves the RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability) characteristics and performance of storage systems while lowering in-field servicing costs and enabling new and advanced diagnostics and management capabilities. Emulex's InSpeed SOC 320 features unique new capabilities such as Automatic Trunking and Fairness that allow storage designers to create storage enclosures that are inherently more dependable and efficient.

"Our collaboration with the Emulex Product Development team has enabled us to integrate the InSpeed SOC 320 with our existing RS-1600 storage enclosure technology. This new technology provides dramatic performance increases as well as numerous enhancements to system reliability and SAN availability," said John Howarth, Senior Director of Product Marketing, Xyratex Storage Systems. "These enhancements will bring higher data availability and lower maintenance costs to the end user."

The 20-port Emulex InSpeed SOC 320 serves as the core technology for Emulex's 2 Gb/s embedded storage switch products. Advanced features of the InSpeed SOC 320-based family of embedded storage switch products include:

-- Automatic Trunking Capabilities-- Multiplies internal bandwidth
with fail-over pathing for ultra-reliable performance.

-- Drive Fairness and Prioritization -- Prevents drive starvation
and ensures equal access to all drives within the storage array.

-- Stealth Intelligent Change Manager -- Fully isolates systems from
    change notification disruptions.

-- Continuous Diagnostic and Health Monitoring Capabilities.

InSpeed technology lowers in-field servicing costs and MTTR (Mean Time To Repair), significantly improving storage system reliability levels and provides the ability to increase performance while scaling to maximize the useable drive count.

"With Xyratex's introduction of the RS-1600-FC-SBD storage enclosure, a world-class storage provider has implemented a switched back-end architecture by using Emulex's field-proven InSpeed SOC 320 Technology," said Brian Reed, Vice President of Business Development, Emulex Corporation. "We are excited that Xyratex selected InSpeed and that our long-standing relationship with them has produced yet another winning product that represents an industry first."
