Northrop Grumman Receives International `Stamp of Approval' for Environmental Management

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Feb. 13, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- The International Standards Organization (ISO) has recognized Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Integrated Systems sector facility in El Segundo, Calif., for meeting stringent industry standards for managing, controlling and documenting the site's impact on the environment.

Advanced Waste Management Systems, an accredited third-party ISO registrar, issued the "stamp of approval" known as ISO 14001 certification following a six-day audit last fall. The review included assessments of employees' awareness of Northrop Grumman's environmental policy, the company's integration of business management practices with environmental operational practices, its corrective action program, and management review of environmental practices. Auditors noted the company's "obvious commitment (to) and pride in environmental performance throughout the ranks."

"Environmental management is an essential part of Northrop Grumman's way of doing business and has been for many years," said Gary W. Ervin, sector vice president for Integrated Systems' Air Combat Systems business area. "We take a team approach by engaging our employees and emphasizing the importance of protecting the environment in everyday life as well as in the workplace."

Northrop Grumman last year helped the state of California reduce energy consumption by installing "cool roofs" on several buildings at the facility. The use of this simple, reflective technology helped California stretch its energy supply and made Northrop Grumman a leading contributor to a statewide energy conservation program that saved an estimated 19.5 megawatts of electricity on high-demand summer afternoons. The company also conducts various waste reduction initiatives and participates in numerous pollution prevention activities, including Rideshare Week and Earth Day.

ISO, the world's largest developer of standards, is a network of international standards institutes from more than 140 countries working in partnership with international organizations, governments, industry, business and consumer representatives. Its standards include the ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 families of quality and environmental management standards and some 14,000 international standards for business, government and society.
