Beyond the Pale -- New Novel Addresses Duty and Morality in Story of Crime and War

JAMESPORT, N.Y., February 16, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Author Peter Farrell presents an ethical story about war, its effects and the strength of bonds that form in times of extreme stress in his new novel, Beyond the Pale (now available through 1stBooks).

Farrell takes readers deep into the Vietnam War circa 1967. Robin Markham, a good soldier with the long range reconnaissance patrol, finds himself in a classic war time quandary: to obey orders or follow his conscience. In the midst of violence, Hal Brown, a helicopter pilot, descends into the Vietnamese highlands and rescues Robin. However, on escape, Robin makes a decision that will affect both of their lives in the future.

Flash forward 10 years. The war is over and the two men are carrying out their lives in Long Island, N.Y. They meet on more familiar turf, forming a strong bond. Much to his dismay, Robin discovers Hal is involved with the same kind of unsavory characters he tried to leave behind in Vietnam. Now, Robin feels the pull of morality again and realizes he has responsibilities to help Hal that he can't ignore.

Farrell spins an exciting story that involves morals and ethics in a world that seems to have lost all recognition of right and wrong. Beyond the Pale, which refers to brigades and pirates who used to be on the fringes, touches on the military industrial complex and its effects on modern society in this engaging new novel.

A Vietnam veteran and longtime Caribbean stalwart, Farrell says he has "a thing" for places like Cuba, St. Bart's and Long Island, which he refers to as the "Havana Triangle." A graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook with a master's degree in English, he has taught in public schools, owned bars, caught fish and delivered boats throughout the Caribbean and along the East Coast. He has published three other books, Three Screenplays (1stBooks), Foxy and Jost Van Dyke (American Paradise Publishing) and Behold This Dreamer (Imprint Books).
