The Journey of a Soldier -- New book tells story of young man grappling with duty in World War II

OPP, Ala., February 17, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- The tragedy and struggle of a war-torn world can often be seen in the eyes of a soldier. Scotty Zane's new book, A Lifetime of Days (now available through 1stBooks), tells the story of R.Z. Brooks, a young man swept onto the bloody North African front during World War II.

This young man, a preacher's son from rural Alabama, is shipped to Northern Ireland to undergo basic training in preparation to fight the enemy in Europe. While in Ireland, he falls in love with an Irish school teacher, Cathleen McGuire, and pledges to marry her after he returns, which he assumes will only be a few months. However, because of religious and political differences, their love fades.

He tries to cope with the day-to-day experiences of combat, especially after his terrifying participation in the first amphibious landing in American history. He grapples with constant fear of death, a constant panic about enemy fire, all while fighting the elements and struggling with his once-solid religious beliefs.

This eye-opening novel tells the story of all veterans through the eyes of this young man. Constant questioning about why they were allowed to live, silent guilt about the orders they carried out and the sorrow that comes with knowing the gruesomeness of war first hand are on veterans' minds, writes Scotty Zane. Readers are invited to peer intimately into the life of R.Z., his lost love and camaraderie with his howitzer mates.

Scotty Zane served in the U.S. Army from 1988 and 1992, when he was honorably discharged. He served as a law enforcement officer in south Alabama, returned to school and is now a teacher in the Covington County school system. The idea for A Lifetime of Days began when he was given a box of letters his grandfather had written during his days as a World War II soldier. Through extensive research, he created a fictional storyline that is historically accurate and truly reflects the journey of a soldier. A Lifetime of Days is his first book.
