Eclectic Pragmatism -- New Book Examines the Laws of the Universe According to Science and Religion

BETHEL PARK, Pa., February 23, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- There is often a struggle between the beliefs of religion and the tenets of science in regards to the universe. So many scholars on both sides have speculated on the origin of the solar system, but no one has any concrete answers. In his new book, Eclectic Pragmatism: Is There a God? (now available through 1stBooks), Charles H. Peterson examines long-standing beliefs and theories as he explores the truths of the universe.

"The book is a review and critique of some of the information we receive as we grow up and begin making our own observations. The approach is to go back to basics far enough to identify things we can agree on, beginning with our physical world," Peterson says.

Eclectic Pragmatism chronicles thousands of years of thought on the existence of the world to review the nature of scientific relationships and the bases for many concepts of science and religion. Peterson reviews the work and thoughts of the ancient Greeks in regards to the solar system and speeds through the history of these thoughts up to the modern age. He examines the structure of matter, the origin of the sun and planets and the creation of the universe, while keeping scientific theory and theological explanation both in mind.

"Science has really explained very little that is truly fundamental. Rather it has merely described relationships between matter and energy," he says.

Was the solar system the work of some great divine hand or the result of an explosion of gases? Eclectic Pragmatism is an exploration of human thought that searches for the practical answers to the most profound thoughts of creation and existence.

Peterson comes from "a poor background with little more than a set of genes" that helped him excel in math and science. He finds the subjects of science and religion fascinating because they employ logical thinking and empirical information. After graduating from college, he began work in a field that required application of fixed natural laws. He later branched out to less quantitative areas such as religion and human relations. Eclectic Pragmatism is his first book.
