ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., March 1, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- In support of National Engineers Week, and continuing through the month of March, a total of 38 engineering staff members from Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) will visit 20 Chicago-area schools to give students a better understanding of the contribution engineers make to society.
The visits, made by staff from the company's Electronic Systems sector in Rolling Meadows, are part of the Discover "E" (the "E" stands for engineering) program, a nationwide student outreach program aimed at exposing elementary, middle and high school students to engineering and to cultivating an interest in math and science-related careers.
The annual Discover "E" campaign is a school/business partnership sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. The 38 Northrop Grumman volunteers will spend their day with the school children by sharing their engineering experiences and involving the students in hands-on, science-related classroom projects and activities.
Each of the 20 participating schools -- Barrington High School, Bartlett High School, Carl Sandburg Junior High School, Cary Grove High School, Immanuel Lutheran School, Jacobs High School, Kelvyn Park High School, Kennedy Junior High, Palatine High School, South Middle School, St. Alexander School, St. Colette School, St. Matthias, St. Peter Lutheran School, St. Thecla, St. Thomas of Villanova, Thomas Middle School, Vernon Hills High School, Walter R. Sundling Jr. High, and Winston Churchill Jr. High School -- will also receive a monetary donation from Northrop Grumman to benefit their math and science curricula.
"The Discover `E' program is a great way for Northrop Grumman to share the talents of its people and give back to the community at the same time," explained Greg Schmidt, vice president of Engineering and Manufacturing at Northrop Grumman's Defensive Systems Division in Rolling Meadows.
Northrop Grumman has been one of the largest corporate sponsors of Discover "E" since its inception in 1990. During that period, the company has contributed more than $1.5 million of in-kind support and direct financial contributions across the U.S. to local schools' math and science activities.
This is the fifth consecutive year that Northrop Grumman's Rolling Meadows facility has participated in the national program, which kicked off as part of National Engineers Week, an annual event that commenced in 1951. National Engineers Week (from February 23-28) is timed to coincide with the birthday of George Washington, the country's first president who was also a military engineer and land surveyor.
Northrop Grumman's Defensive Systems Division, at which the 38 volunteers work, is a component of its Baltimore-based Electronic Systems sector, a world leader in the design, development, and manufacture of defense and commercial electronic systems, including airborne radar, navigation systems, electronic countermeasures, precision weapons, airspace management systems, communications systems, space sensors, marine and naval systems, government systems, and logistics services.
