ADVA Optical Networking And Siemens Extend OEM Contract To Include FSP 1500

Siemens' SURPASS hiT portfolio now includes ADVA's FSP 1500 as GFP access solution for next-generation SDH networks

MUNICH, Germany and MAHWAH, N.J., March 11, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- ADVA Optical Networking (FSE: ADV), a leading global provider of optical networking solutions, today announced that its Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) contract with Siemens Information and Communication Networks (ICN) has been extended to include ADVA's Fiber Service Platform (FSP) 1500 product. ADVA and Siemens have established a close, strategic partnership over the past four years, building a large base of carrier and enterprise customers that spans the globe.

Launched in September 2003 and part of ADVA's fifth generation of products, the FSP 1500 enables carriers to quickly and cost-effectively deploy Ethernet, storage, and legacy voice services in a variety of configurations over their existing Synchronous Digital Hierarchy/Synchronous Optical Network (SDH/SONET) networks to enterprise customers of all sizes. FSP 1500 provides an important addition to Siemens' comprehensive SURPASS hiT product portfolio of optical transport and SDH-based multi-service provisioning platforms, which support a variety of network solutions from enterprise customer premise sites through to ultra long-haul carrier networks. The FSP 1500 is installed at the customer premise site as a network termination device and uses Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) technology to aggregate up to eight local area network (LAN), storage, and voice applications on a combined STM-16/OC-48 interface. The applications are then seamlessly transported through the existing SDH/SONET equipment in the carrier's network to their final destination.

"The FSP 1500's compact size and low price point make it a compelling value proposition. Fit to our industry-leading SURPASS hiT portfolio, we can now approach any carrier with an end-to-end solution to enable them to deploy new Ethernet and storage services and simultaneously maximize their existing SDH infrastructure," stated Manfred Wiegand, Vice President ICN CN Solution Management Transport at Siemens. "Having successfully completed extensive lab testing, we began promoting this product to customers earlier this year."

"Siemens has built up a large SDH customer base/market presence throughout Europe and established itself as a leading telecommunications equipment vendor. ADVA was the first to market in September 2003 with a GFP standards-compliant customer premise solution for data services over established SDH networks. Together with Siemens, we are leveraging their installed customer base as well as actively seeking out new carriers to demonstrate that the FSP 1500 offers a price point and simplicity of operation which make a broad roll-out of Ethernet and storage services for carriers easily achievable," commented Jurgen Hansjosten, Chief Sales Officer at ADVA.

The FSP 1500 utilizes the most recent ITU standards designed to make existing SDH/SONET networks more data aware and enable smooth, seamless voice and data interworking: GFP, Virtual Concatenation (VCAT), and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS). Leveraging all three methods makes the FSP 1500 a unique SDH/SONET access solution capable of in-service upgrades and highly valuable to carriers who plan to extensively roll out Ethernet and storage services to their enterprise customer base. The FSP 1500 is fully integrated with ADVA's and Siemens' network management software to ensure that carriers can provision, monitor, and manage services from any node in the network.
