Leading up to the CeBIT 2004 trade fair in Hanover, Germany, Nokia has announced an initiative to enable operators to use leading manufacturers' push to talk terminals with Nokia's push to talk infrastructure solution, and at the same time guarantee a smooth network software upgrade path to the upcoming Open Mobile Alliance standard for Push to talk over Cellular (PoC).
The majority of Nokia's efforts in standardizing push to talk is focusing on the OMA standardization, which is expected to be finalized before the end of the year. Nokia's push to talk offering will be fully compliant with the OMA standard once it is finalized.
Because of market demand for a rapid launch of this convenient form of instant communications, Nokia's Push to talk over Cellular solution will be introduced in GSM networks already in the second quarter of 2004 as a commercial service using pre-standard protocols.
Going forward, Nokia's push to talk network servers will, in addition to its own pre-standard protocol, also support the alternative pre-standard protocol suggested by the other members of the PoC technology co-operation group (Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens). Nokia expects that other PoC server vendors will accordingly implement support for Nokia PoC terminals already in the pre-standard phase.
With more than 30 operator trials ongoing, and three public commercial contracts, Nokia is leading the market for Push to talk over Cellular. Nokia's first push to talk terminal, the Nokia 5140 will be commercially available during the second quarter. During 2004, Nokia will introduce a full range of push to talk capable GSM phones, including Symbian OS based smart phones. From 2005 onwards push to talk will become available for virtually all Nokia GPRS/WCDMA phones.
