Emulex Announces Support for Forthcoming Intel Processors with 64-bit Extension Technology

Emulex HBAs Fully Complement Backward Compatibility and Investment Protection Model

COSTA MESA, Calif., March 18, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the market leader in Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) and a leading supplier of intelligent building blocks for next generation storage networking systems, announced today its support for the forthcoming Intel(r) processors with 64-bit extension technology that will augment today's 32-bit application platforms. As a member of Intel's early developer program, Emulex ensures its driver technology will be deployed in conjunction with Intel's delivery of the 64-bit extensions. Both the 64-bit extension technology from Intel, and Emulex's driver technology will maintain complete compatibility with existing 32-bit applications.

As more customers are faced with the challenges of managing growing amounts of data, some 32-bit applications need to address more memory. As more users migrate to 64-bit systems, the emergence of mixed 32- and 64-bit environments has prompted a need for 64-bit extensions. The 64-bit extensions enable customers with existing 32-bit systems to take advantage of a simplified and supported upgrade path. In addition, Emulex is working closely with Intel to ensure hardware investment protection and backward compatibility.

"Once again, Emulex is collaborating with Intel to deliver driver support for its 64-bit extension technology, and we are committed to remaining at the technology forefront," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing, Emulex Corp. "Emulex has a unique firmware-based architecture that enables complete driver compatibility with its previously installed base of HBAs, providing customers with ongoing investment protection."

The entire family of Emulex LightPulse(tm) HBAs is Intel 64-bit extension technology-ready, including its most recent additions, the enterprise LP10000 and midrange LP1050 PCI-X solutions and the recently-announced LP10000Ex PCI Express HBA. Emulex HBAs and drivers will undergo extensive testing with Intel's platforms, which include the 64-bit extension technology to ensure robust performance in both Windows and Linux operating environments. Emulex has also worked closely with Intel to ensure its LightPulse family of Fibre Channel HBAs fully support Intel(r) Itanium(r) 2 processor-based platforms. The Emulex family of HBAs enables seamless migration to the emerging Itanium 2-based platforms via its firmware upgradeability and driver compatibility across all HBA generations.

"As one of many new technologies enhancing the value of the Intel Xeon(tm) processor based servers, 64-bit extensions provide increased memory addressing capability," said Jon Sharp, Director of Platform Marketing, Intel's Enterprise Platforms Group. "We welcome Emulex's support for the new technology for future Intel Xeon processor-based platforms and their continued support of Intel(r) Itanium(r)M 2 processor based systems."

Emulex's market-leading family of HBAs offers the robust and reliable connectivity that the world's leading server and storage suppliers have come to rely on. Emulex connectivity solutions provide customers with simplified upgrade paths, a broad range of drivers and software solutions, reduced management complexity, which result in a lower total cost of ownership.
