The Battler and the Bay Area -- Author Recounts Father's Life in New Book

SAN FRANCISCO, March 19, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Paul B. Fay Jr.'s father loved a good round of golf, but it was the things he did for San Francisco that may have been his greatest achievement next to the love, respect and tenderness he showed for his family. Fay Jr.'s new book, The Battler with JFK and Other Individuals of Note (now available through 1stBooks), is a biography of his father, Paul Fay Sr., that details the times in American history that shaped the world today.

Fay Sr. was known as the Battler, a name that reflected the way he lived his life. He owned and operated The Fay Improvement Company, a heavy construction company in the Bay area, and built much of San Francisco and the surroundings areas. From his position as president of the Pacific Union Club, he was influential in the city's growth. Located in the former home of early gold miner and city founder James Flood, the club sat across the street from the famous Fairmont Hotel. From this club he made an impact and improvement in other surrounding areas, including the Woodside Community nuzzled behind Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

The Battler's greatest accomplishment, however, was his family. Fay Jr. recounts his life growing up with his five sisters. He remembers a trip to Berlin in 1936 to see the Olympics and the numerous weekend retreats his father arranged for their devout Catholic family. Fay Jr. recalls encounters with John F. Kennedy in World War II and the impact this influential man had on him and his father. The Battler had many famous run ins with the likes of men, such as Charles Lindbergh, Franklin D. Roosevelt and David Brinkley, among many others. Through 63 chapters, Fay Jr. remembers the battles his father fought, the people he influenced and those that influenced him.

A story of how one life can have a real impact, The Battler with JFK and Other Individuals of Note is a life history of one man's walk through life and the influence he made on his family and the world.

Fay Jr. wrote the bestselling book, The Pleasure of His Company, which chronicles his personal friendship with JFK dating back to their time in World War II and through Fay's appointment to Under Secretary of the Navy. He has appeared in a number of documentaries about this period of time, including ones for National Geographic and the British Broadcasting Corporation.
