PHILIPS LICENSES POWERVR MBX GRAPHICS ACCELERATOR FROM ARM FOR MOBILE APPLICATIONS PROCESSOR

PowerVR MBX accelerator to be paired with ARM microprocessor core

ARM (LSE:ARM) (Nasdaq:ARMHY), the industry's leading provider of 16/32-bit embedded RISC microprocessor solutions, announced today at ElectronicaUSA/Embedded Systems Conference, San Francisco, that Philips Semiconductors has licensed the MBX R-S graphics accelerator core, which is based on the PowerVR MBX 3D graphics solution from Imagination Technologies, for use in Philips's next-generation mobile applications processor. Philips will pair the MBX R-S core from ARM with a previously licensed ARM926EJ-STM microprocessor core.

"Our experience in developing applications processors that incorporate ARM(R) microprocessor cores gave us the confidence to expand that relationship into MBX technology," said Gert-Jan Kaat, senior vice president of Mobile Communications, Philips Semiconductors. "In addition, our developments in the area of product integration gives us considerable time-to-market advantages."

"3D graphics is driving the mobile and wireless applications market, and we are committed to empowering our semiconductor Partners with the technology they need to stay ahead of the curve," said Mike Inglis, EVP Marketing, ARM. "By leveraging the synergy between the PowerVR MBX solution and microprocessor cores for their next-generation mobile applications processors, Philips will have a fast, reliable path to market."

Imagination Technologies' PowerVR MBX IP uses the unique PowerVR tile-based rendering solution, which enables a very small die to deliver higher performance and higher image quality with lower power consumption. The MBX R-S graphics accelerator from ARM targets wireless devices that require a programmable resolution of up to QVGA.
