EL SEGUNDO, Calif., April 6, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- For the eighth consecutive year, Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been honored by California's primary recycling agency for its success in reducing waste and protecting the environment.
The California Integrated Waste Management Board has named the company's El Segundo site, headquarters of its Integrated Systems sector, a winner in the agency's 2003 Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP). Now in its 11th year, the WRAP honors businesses for lowering the amount of trash they produce, which conserves resources and reduces waste disposal in landfills.
"This string of awards reflects Northrop Grumman's long-standing commitment to recycling, energy conservation and waste reduction," said Gary W. Ervin, vice president at the Integrated Systems sector . "Waste reduction is not only good for the environment, it's also good for our customers. The more effective we are in reducing waste and conserving resources, the more effective we can be in producing high-performance products and services at a competitive price."
Last year, the El Segundo facility recycled more than 1,800 tons of material, which included paper, steel, cardboard, wood, toner cartridges, computers, plastic and glass. This effort produced approximately $108,000 in revenue and cost savings for the company.

In 2003, the El Segundo facility was recognized by the International Standards Organization (ISO) for meeting stringent industry requirements for managing, controlling and documenting the site's impact on the environment. Known as ISO 14001 certification, this environmental "stamp of approval" was issued by Advanced Waste Management Systems, an accredited third party registrar for ISO.
The company also helped California reduce energy consumption by installing "cool roofs" on several of its buildings in El Segundo last year. The use of this simple, reflective-material technology helped California stretch its energy supply and made Northrop Grumman a leading contributor to a statewide energy conservation program that saved an estimated 19.5 megawatts of electricity on high-demand summer afternoons.
