Mexican Passages -- New Book of Short Stories Captures Experiences of Mexico City Inhabitants

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., April 20, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- The intriguing stories in Beatrice Silverman's book, Mexican Passages: Short Stories (now available through AuthorHouse), explore events and relationships that, for the most part, could only have occurred in Mexico. The characters pursue their lives against a background of real places and historical events, which lend authenticity to them and to their stories.

With one exception, Silverman's stories take place in Mexico City, where most of the largely middle class characters reside. In any culture, honest people may find themselves caught in a web of dishonesty, poor working class families cannot find a path out of poverty, or union members may be betrayed by the government they trust. The differences lie in the way Silverman's characters view themselves and their lives and the manner in which they confront and resolve problems. It is these traits that make the stories Silverman shares unique to the Mexican experience.

Living in Mexico for more than 20 years, Silverman captures her characters with great detail and nuance, bringing Carlos, Salvador, Natalya and a host of others to life. "For twenty years Spanish was my first language and Mexico was my country," says Silverman. "These stories are part of the harvest of my Mexican life."

Each of the 10 stories in Mexican Passages is complete in itself. Together, these tales offer readers insight into the lives and customs of the Mexican culture and the relationships among family members, friends and lovers.

Silverman, born in Boston, holds degrees from Boston University and the Sorbonne. She earned her medical degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and she has practiced medicine in both Mexico and the United States. She lived in Mexico for 20 years as a wife, mother, medical student and physician. She has written one nonfiction book titled Woman Well at Ease, a Primer for Independence. She is currently working on a novel set in Mexico.
