MSV Announces First ATC Patent Addressing Terrestrial Reuse of Satellite Band Frequencies

RESTON, Va., May 17, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Mobile Satellite Ventures (MSV) announced today that the company has been awarded its first patent on the next generation satellite system technology with ancillary terrestrial component (ATC) innovation.

Peter D. Karabinis, vice president and chief technical officer, has been awarded patent #6,684,057, "Systems and Methods for Terrestrial Reuse of Cellular Satellite Frequency Spectrum," which covers systems and methods for reusing satellite band frequencies terrestrially while minimizing interference to GPS, other satellite systems, and MSV's own system. The patent is a cornerstone that will support MSV's ability to deploy ATC in a way that minimizes interference to satellite systems, and addresses ways to mitigate residual interference levels using interference-cancellation techniques.

This is a fundamental, key patent that reinforces the company's position as a first-to-market leader in the emerging technology arena of ATC. Over the last three years MSV has filed more than 30 patent applications relating to ATC, "an area that we believe will continue to serve as very fertile ground for innovation," Karabinis said.

Since this patent award was filed approximately three years ago, MSV has evolved and further refined many critical elements of ATC, including its interference cancellation techniques and has demonstrated those refinements using prototype equipment in both the laboratory and in tests over MSV's geostationary satellites. These advanced interference cancellation techniques and other ATC technology aspects are covered in other patent applications that the company expects will be awarded in the next 12 to 24 months. With this patent award and 29 other pending applications covering the next- generation satellite technology of ATC, MSV continues to lead in advanced developments.
