New Book Reveals Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Advocacy in the Seventies

ARLINGTON, Va., May 24, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Very few people have been granted access to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's papers. But with Amy Leigh Campbell's brilliant new book, Raising the Bar, that is about to change. Relevant and incisive, it highlights Ginsburg's role in the progression of her complicated, multi-layered strategy to combat gender discrimination from theory to implementation.

Raising the Bar chronicles Ruth Bader Ginsburg's contribution to American constitutional law through her efforts as professor, lawyer, and women's rights advocate. Focusing on the years 1971 to 1980, it explores the decade during which Ginsburg founded and was general counsel to the American Civil Liberties Union Women's Rights Project. Several scholars have undertaken similar analyses in the past, but the missing ingredient has long been Ginsburg's own perspective now available through her donation of private papers.

A feminist activist who has worked against gender discrimination for over a decade, Campbell is one of the three people granted access to Ginsburg's papers. Through Raising the Bar, she shares this vital information with readers, as well as the legal and the academic communities where it will spark discussion about the progress yet ahead in the area of gender discrimination.
