AUSTIN, Texas, May 24, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Buffalo Technology, a global leader in the design, development and manufacturing of memory products, announced today that it is working on validation of its PC3200 and PC4300 DDR2 (Double Data Rate 2) memory modules in upcoming motherboard and serverboard products to meet the qualification requirements for Intel's Platform Memory Module DDR validation program.
DDR2 is the next generation of the current memory standard, DDR-SDRAM. The solution is designed to enhance performance with the ability to pre-fetch four bits of memory instead of two, which is the current standard. DDR2 also increases memory speeds by transferring more data internally.
"This effort ensures cross-compatibility with various DDR2 technologies, which provides multiple module solutions for notebook, desktop and server computing products," said Kazu Tsukada, Executive Engineer of the R & D Group for Buffalo Inc. (Japan). "Buffalo is working on a diverse DDR2 product line that supports all of Intel's upcoming chipset offerings."

Based on the new JEDEC (Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council) standard, DDR2 uses new form factors 240pin DIMM, 244pin DIMM and 200pin SODIMM that are not compatible with current DDR motherboards and require different processors and chipsets. DDR2 offers faster transmission speeds and features On-Die Termination (ODT), which helps reduce signal transmission errors and improves timing efficiency. Additional features of DDR2 include Posted Column Address Strobe, which allows execution of overlapping commands and Bi-directional Data Strobe to eliminate fluctuations in voltage. DDR2 also uses 50% less power than previous DDR technology, which provides computer systems requiring more memory to run larger capacity modules with less power drain from the motherboard.
