Anoto receives order from Portugal-based NetSaude to provide system enabling digital prescription of pharmaceuticals in Portugal

LUND, Sweden, May 25, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- In order to streamline the country's prescription handling, along with several other services supporting the activity of physicians, Portuguese company NetSaude has developed an integrated solution, Netmedico, to which the Anoto functionality is being incorporated. The Anoto functionality based system will help reducing state costs for subsidised drugs while at the same time increasing the speed and control of prescription handling. The first services are expected to be commercially available in the fourth quarter of 2004. The initial order to Anoto, comprising the licenses for several thousand digital pens, service development, application development tools and pattern licenses, is valued at Euro 260.000 in 2004.

The global objective of the Netmedico solution is to help physicians in their daily activities, through the support of breakthrough technology and services. Among other services, physicians will have the possibility to issue digital prescriptions, through digital pens and digital prescription pads enabling Anoto functionality.

When physicians issue prescriptions on digital prescription pads, that information will be sent wirelessly to a central server where intelligent recognition of the content will occur. Whenever the prescribing physician allows it, a choice of generic equivalent - and cheaper - medicines may take place at the pharmacy, enabling patients and the Government to spend less money. Prescriptions are sent from the paper to a mobile phone by using the Nokia Digital Pen.

"One reason for having chosen to integrate Anoto functionality in the system is that digital pens are simple and intuitive to use, implying that the technology is ready to be used without having to change the medical profession's user behaviour. Anoto functionality will also result in increased control, safe archives, faster information management and more effective administration", says Nuno Delerue, CEO at NetSaude.

The project is financed at 75% by the EU funded Saude XXI Program and at 25% by NetSaude.
