Antitrust Modernization Commission Announces First Public Meeting and Appointment of Executive Director and General Counsel


WASHINGTON, June 28, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Antitrust Modernization Commission ("AMC") today announced its first public meeting, which will take place on July 15, 2004. The meeting will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2226, which is located at Independence Avenue and South Capitol Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. There will be a brief period for questions from the public at the conclusion of the meeting.

The AMC is a 12-member, bipartisan commission created by Congress to examine whether the need exists to modernize the antitrust laws. It is required to "solicit the views of all parties concerned with the operation of the antitrust laws," identify and study issues, and report to Congress and the President within three years of the Commission's first meeting. The purpose of the meeting on July 15 is to discuss and adopt the process by which the Commission will identify issues to study in fulfilling its statutory duties.

The members of the Antitrust Modernization Commission were appointed by the President, the leadership of the Senate, and the leadership of the House of Representatives. Deborah A. Garza, a partner at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP, in Washington, D.C., serves as chair of the Commission. Jonathan R. Yarowsky, a partner at Patton Boggs LLP, also in Washington, D.C., serves as Vice-Chair.

The ten commissioners are: W. Stephen Cannon, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Circuit City Stores, Inc., Richmond, Virginia; Dennis W. Carlton, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, Co-editor of The Journal of Law and Economics, and Senior Managing Director at Lexecon; Makan Delrahim, Deputy Assistant Attorney General for International, Policy, and Appellate Matters in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice; Jonathan M. Jacobson, a partner at Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld LLP, in New York City; Donald G. Kempf, Jr., Executive Vice President, General Counsel, Chief Legal Officer, and Secretary for Morgan Stanley, New York City; Sanford M. Litvack, a partner at Hogan & Hartson, Los Angeles; Deborah P. Majoras, a partner at Jones Day, Washington, D.C.; John H. Shenefield, a partner at Morgan Lewis, Washington, D.C.; Debra A. Valentine, Vice President, Secretary, and Associate General Counsel, United Technologies Corporation, Hartford, Connecticut; and, John L. Warden, a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, New York City.

The Antitrust Modernization Commission also announced its appointment of Andrew J. Heimert as Executive Director & General Counsel. Mr. Heimert was until his appointment an attorney in the Office of Policy & Coordination within the Bureau of Competition at the Federal Trade Commission. Previously, Mr. Heimert was an associate at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and an A.B. from Stanford University.
