The Power of Determination -- Author Shares Perils, Joys of Life

COLLEGE PARK, Ga., July 13, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- From humble beginnings in Jamaica to renewed hope in America, Sadie N. Williams' life has been a tumultuous journey dotted with triumph. She tells her brave story in her new book, The Other Side of Sadie (now available through AuthorHouse).

Born in Jamaica, Williams was raised by her grandmother after her mother died. At age 9, she moved in with her father and stepmother, a woman whose harsh discipline was difficult to bear. When her father died, Williams' life turned upside down. In her first major display of individuality and courage, she began earning money for herself and later ran away from her stepmother's home. She vividly describes the events of her young life, from her near-drowning at an abandoned harbor to the birth of a son after an unwelcome sexual encounter.

Williams offers readers the details of her struggle for survival. She had five more children with a man she lived with, later losing one to a brain tumor. Williams also shares her experience with a love triangle, a failed marriage and a spiteful husband. Her path led her to southeastern Canada, where she worked to obtain a visa for passage to America and sent money back to Jamaica to support her children. Faced with many perils during this time, Williams longed for the reunification of her family.

As a girl she had a dream about the Statue of Liberty and for years assumed it was Jesus wielding a sword. When she finally learned what the statue was, she was in America seeking a better life for herself and her children. Throughout the book, she tells of her reliance on God and includes several works of poetry she wrote through the years.

The Other Side of Sadie illustrates the power of determination and inner strength. From her youth climbing trees and selling bread in Jamaica to her romantic interludes and fight to build a stable existence, Williams recounts her inspiring experiences.
