Northrop Grumman Delivers Command and Control System to Bulgaria

RESTON, Va., Aug. 18, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has delivered a national military command and control system to Bulgaria, the first in Eastern Europe that is fully compatible with U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization systems.

The command center, located in Sofia, was fully operational in May.

Under contract to the U.S. Air Force Electronic Systems Command, Northrop Grumman's Mission Systems sector developed, integrated, installed, tested and delivered the system, three months ahead of schedule. Over the next six months, the sector will provide on-site support and help train Bulgarian soldiers to use the system; it will provide off-site support through May 2006.

The system merges data from multiple sources and displays a common operational picture to give military commanders the information and situational awareness they need to plan, execute and manage military operations.

During a May 20 ceremony, Bulgarian officials demonstrated the system with an interactive presentation of air, land and sea forces over Bulgaria and the surrounding area. In another first, Bulgarian military members connected Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov with Bulgarian military commanders in Iraq and other countries using the Northrop Grumman-supplied system. "The Bulgarian National Military Command Center reflects the increasing importance of Eastern Europe in U.S. national policy and Northrop Grumman's leadership in this strategic area," said Barry Rhine, president, Defense Mission Systems, Northrop Grumman Mission Systems. "We are providing military commanders the ability to customize the system for their needs, including civil emergencies."

The system includes the interoperable C4I services (ICS) server and the command and control personal computer workstation, a commercial command and control system developed to provide a national capability and interoperability with the U.S. Department of Defense's Global Command and Control System.

ICS and the command and control personal computer provide functionality similar to what the company developed for the Defense Information Systems Agency and the U.S. Marine Corps. The Global Command and Control System and the Command and Control Personal Computer were used extensively during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
