History Formed by Divine Teachings -- New Book Offers Examination of Jesus' Message

TEXAS Aug. 25, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- In his new book, The Deposit of Faith: What the Catholic Church Really Believes, Jesus Teaching Divine Revelation in his Body, the Church (now available through AuthorHouse) Eugene Kevane, Ph.D., discusses the legacy of Jesus Christ and how it shaped universal history.

Universal history, as foreseen by the Prophet Daniel, has been caused by "The Deposit of Faith and Morals" left by Christ himself, Kevane writes. Its truths and the imperfections of human response to it have shaped history. That history includes a continual succession of power, from Greece to Rome, the Antichrist and finally the Second Coming. The Deposit of Faith explains how Jesus' message built this universal historical structure.

Kevane also presents the question that has divided priests and scholars: Is Christendom moving toward the "Great Apostasy" predicted in the Bible? Kevane argues that people in modern society are losing their faith, as seen in practices such as legalized abortion, sexual perversions within the Catholic Church and a modern interpretation of original Bible doctrine. This gradual loss of reverence for religious principles is moving the world ever closer to the prophesied transfer of power to the Antichrist, he says.

These findings highlight the need for Jesus' Deposit of Faith in the world. It must be embraced again in full.

"Our obligation, our authenticity and our happiness result from fidelity in the formative teaching of the Deposit which has come down by unbroken tradition from the Apostles," Kevane writes.

The Deposit of Faith portrays what Jesus wanted his followers to know and helps Christians strengthen their spiritual lives. For parents and educators bombarded by the "heresy of modernism," Kevane provides guidance and inspires renewed belief.

Kevane died in 1996. A Scripture scholar, theologian, educator and catechist, he studied theology at the North American College in Rome. He founded Heelan Central Catholic High School in Sioux City, Iowa and earned his doctorate at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he later became dean of the School of Education and editor of the Catholic Educational Review. Kevane founded the Notre Dame Pontifical Catechetical Institute for Catechetical Instruction and was a visiting professor of catechetics at the Angelicum University in Rome and professor of catechetics at Saint John's University in New York.
