HARRISBURG, Pa., Aug. 31, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Worldwide industrial services and products company Harsco Corporation (NYSE:HSC) announced today the award of 21 college scholarships totaling up to $300,000 to assist outstanding children of Harsco employees throughout the world obtain the advanced education necessary to reach their career goals. The scholarships provide assistance toward university studies in any country and any discipline, and are worth as much as $3,500 per year per student.
This year's Harsco scholarship winners represent seven different Harsco business units in eight countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Indonesia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. The winners, six in the U.S. and 15 internationally, were independently selected by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for U.S. recipients and the Institute of International Education for international recipients, based on superior academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, community involvement, and personal character. All of the scholarships are funded by the separately administered Harsco Corporation Fund charitable giving arm.
The awards mark Harsco's 30th consecutive year of college scholarship grants to the top-performing children of its employees, during which time Harsco has awarded over $3 million in scholarships to more than 300 qualified students. International scholarships were added to the program in 1999 in parallel with Harsco's increasing international expansion, and have already accounted for more than 80 awards in over ten countries.
