Fujitsu Selects Emulex InSpeed SOC 320 for New ETERNUS Storage Solutions

InSpeed SOC 320 Creates SBOD-Based Switched Back-End Architecture in Fujitsu ETERNUS 3000 Product Line

COSTA MESA, Calif., Sept. 13, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the market leader in Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) and embedded storage switches, announced today that Fujitsu Limited of Japan has incorporated Emulex's award-winning InSpeed(tm) switch-on-a-chip technology into its ETERNUS 3000 midrange storage solution to create a switched back-end architecture. The new ETERNUS solution began shipping last month.

Implementation of Emulex's InSpeed SOC 320 converts JBOD (Just A Bunch Of Disks) storage disk arrays to an SBOD(tm) (Switched Bunch Of Disks), providing switched disk drive connectivity within the drive drawers. Creating a switched back-end architecture using InSpeed in an SBOD configuration affords drive isolation, while enhancing the RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability) characteristics and performance of storage solutions. In a Storage Performance Council (SPC) benchmark test, the InSpeed SOC 320-enabled ETERNUS 3000 Model 700 recorded the world record for performance on a midrange-class storage system. Fujitsu also utilized the Emulex 2Gb/s PCI-X Fibre Channel host bus adapter for high performance SAN connectivity in the SPC benchmark configuration.

"Emulex's InSpeed technology has long been a part of Fujitsu's ETERNUS line of midrange storage solutions," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing, Emulex Corp. "It is a privilege to work with such a world-class storage provider as Fujitsu to deploy new products that break new barriers in terms of performance and RAS. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Fujitsu by delivering ongoing value to the various tiers of ETERNUS storage solutions."

Businesses use highly integrated data replication technologies provided by Fujitsu's ETERNUS Storage Systems to enhance the value of enterprise information. The ETERNUS Series is made up of a broad range of low-, mid- and enterprise-class storage solutions that integrate a rich set of features and functionality with world-class performance levels. The ETERNUS Series incorporates extremely high-density drive technology and offers the fastest rotational drive speeds in the industry (15,000 RPM). The new ETURNUS 3000 Model 700 contains iSCSI support and enhanced mid-range RAID performance.

"Following Fujitsu tradition, our new ETERNUS 3000 storage line creates higher industry performance standards," said Mr. Koichi Ueda, General Manager, Storage Systems Division, Storage Systems Group, Fujitsu Limited. "Our success is due in part to the leading technologies, including Emulex's InSpeed SOC 320, that we incorporate into each system. The performance level achieved by the new ETERNUS 3000 Model 700, for example, is the world's highest, as was the Model 600 previously. Emulex's product development team has been tremendous to work with and we anticipate there will be an extremely favorable reaction from customers to the new ETERNUS product line."

InSpeed technology is an advanced switching architecture coupling a non-blocking crossbar switch with unique loop port logic resulting in a single, highly integrated SOC capable of handling multiple Fibre Channel devices in embedded SOC, blade and box environments. InSpeed improves storage system RAS characteristics and enables enhanced performance and management capabilities in disk and tape storage arrays. The InSpeed SOC 320 includes features such as Automatic Trunking and integrated Fairness and Prioritization to guarantee equal access to all drives. The InSpeed SOC 320 brings point-to-point switched connectivity to the individual drives in the storage array, enabling new drive-level diagnostics and preventative maintenance and eliminating the single-point-of-failure risks that each individual drive poses to the entire drive shelf and sometimes the entire storage array.
