Scania's R-series International Truck of the Year

SODERTALJE, Sweden, Sept. 22, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Scania has been awarded the prestigious trophy International Truck of the Year 2005. The statement from the jury highlights the strengths of the Scania R-series, e.g. driver comfort, handling and operating economy.

"The trophy is not just a reward to our engineers and production experts. It is also an acknowledgement of the efforts made by the whole Scania organisation," said Leif Ostling at the presentation ceremony in conjunction with the opening of the IAA commercial vehicle exhibition in Hanover.

This time Scania is awarded for the R-series, launched early this year and intended primarily for long-distance transport applications.

The statement of the jury, which consists of 18 leading European truck journalists, includes the following passage:

"The R Series impressed the jury with its particular attention to driver comfort through a wholesale revision of the cab interior. Improved ergonomics, better cab comfort and a more refined driving environment all combine to give the R Series enhanced driver appeal. In addition, Scania's attention to the driveline, new electronic architecture and cleaner more efficient engines was worthy of particular note."

"To a large extent, the jury has summarised our targets when we started developing the new truck range in the late 1990s," says Leif Ostling. "Judging by the reactions from customers and industry experts, as well as from the jury, we have reached our targets."

"The fact that Scania is appointed International Truck of the Year is also proof of Sweden's strength as an industrial nation, capable of developing and producing competitive product for the international market," concludes Leif Ostling.
