During an arduous, Depression-era childhood, Vaeth felt unwanted by her father. Her family moved often, and many times she was forced to live with other families. She didn't shed tears, knowing that there would be a time when she would be an adult and could run her own life.
As a young woman, Vaeth worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C. She made many friends, and later married and had two children. Her husband, an excessive gambler, caused her much grief and strained family resources. Despite the stress, Vaeth endured and remained in the marriage for the sake of her children. Following retirement from a successful Federal Government career she became a real estate agent, and continued in that profession for 25 years.
Vaeth discusses her views on major issues Americans face today. She touches on subjects ranging from education and violent entertainment to abortion and suicide. Throughout her commentary, she interjects her own creative ideas for reform. For example, Vaeth writes about the staggering amount of crime in America and an imperfect justice system that often acquits guilty defendants. Part of the problem lies with overzealous prosecuting attorneys and biased defense lawyers, she writes. Her solution is to create the position of "justice coordinator" to collect evidence in an unbiased fashion.
Vaeth's life experiences have made her a concerned American, and she has chosen to speak out in Survival and Concerns on a number of issues.
"We must not sit on the sidelines and let the world pass by," she writes. "We must be active participants in promoting a better America."
Vaeth grew up in Michigan, Indiana, Missouri and Florida. As a federal government employee, Vaeth earned numerous awards. She also wrote a weekly newspaper column. Survival and Concerns is her first published book.
