STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct. 12, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- SWECO has been commissioned to design several smaller dam installations in Senegal. The assignment is worth approximately one million euros.
The new dam installations will give Senegal the opportunity to store the water created during the intense rainy season. The local population will then use this water during the rest of the year.
"We have assisted many African countries in rectifying problems surrounding management of and access to water. Our considerable experience in planning hydropower plants and dams is constantly sought after in new projects," advises Mats Pahlsson, Managing Director of SWECO VBB, transport and civil engineering unit of SWECO.
The new dam installations will be located in six drainage basins in the vicinity of Dakar and Thies. In the inception phase, a feasibility study and an Environmental Impact Assessment will be carried out, during which the best locations and designs for the dams will be identified. The assignment also includes assessing the benefits and the costs of the project.
There are already dams in two of the drainage basins, which were built at the end of the 1990s. They need rehabilitation and SWECO's assignment is to prepare the detailed design and tender documentation for these dams, as well as to supervise the construction work.
The assignment is expected to continue for four years. It is being implemented on behalf of the Ministry of Water in Senegal and is financed by the Nordic Development Fund (NDF).
