                          "Something's Buggin' Us"

Do you remember what it was like back in 1999? You know when internet companies were trading up, literally, every day? Remember the times when AOL had a larger market cap than, oh, how about Delta Airlines or Coke?

Well, we all KNEW that was ridiculous, right? Come on, admit it. You may have been happy that your stocks were climbing, but the truth is that you knew valuations were insane.

The same sort of thing is going on now, we think. Now, yeah, we want the markets to go up. We want everyone to make money. Yes, we want to be "bullish" all the time, too. But, here's what we don't get:

How is it that oil prices continue to climb, the US economy is in the largest deficit-spending situation in our lifetime, and, yep, tech-company valuations are back up again, but the market doesn't sell off?

Now, before you say that the market sold off all year long, realize that the S&P is only down about 3% from the year highs back in January and February.

Only 2.7%!

If someone told you oil prices would be over $50 a barrel, deficit-spending would be as out-of-control as it is now, and that, in general, the economy was no better now than a year ago, would you think stocks would be only down 3%?

Not us, either.

That's what's buggin' us. We want to be bullish, and we think there are certainly stocks with upside, but we are curious as to why the markets have held up so well.

One theory (we think could be valid) is that the market was so beat down over the previous 3 years that there's not much more downside -- regardless of outside factors. That would explain the tepid downfall from the year highs.

What's your opinion? What do you think has held the markets up so well, all things considered?
