HERNDON, Va., Oct. 19, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Department of Transportation to deliver engineering services in support of multiple-independent transportation and communications systems within its John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, part of the Research and Special Programs Administration.
The Volpe Center provides technical research and analysis services to the Transportation Department, and other federal, state, local, international and other transportation organizations.
Under the terms of this follow-on contract, Northrop Grumman's Information Technology (IT) sector will continue to support the Volpe Center through technical services to its surface-, sea- and air-traffic management and control systems. The scope of the work will include strategic planning and systems engineering, traffic and fleet management, automation and display systems integration, and development of navigation, sensor-and-surveillance, guidance-and-control, and communications systems.
"Northrop Grumman can provide the most effective technologies to combat and respond to the issues facing our nation's transportation infrastructure," said Kent Schneider, president of Northrop Grumman IT's Defense Enterprise Solutions unit. "Our long-standing relationship with the Volpe Center will allow us to expand and improve upon our current technology capabilities."
Northrop Grumman IT will also conduct research, design feasibility studies, perform design-and-development testing and implementation, and continue operation and maintenance for various transportation systems.
Northrop Grumman IT is one of five suppliers selected to compete for Volpe task orders. The five-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract has a ceiling value of $46 million.
Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector will provide support for communications programs that include network management, network planning and system design and engineering, and satellite communication technology. In addition, the sector will have oversight of the analysis, design, development, testing and evaluation for guidance and control systems.
Work on the contract will be conducted at Northrop Grumman's Reading, Mass., location, the Volpe Center in Cambridge, Mass., and at various Federal Aviation Administration sites.
The Northrop Grumman team includes the following major subcontractors: Booz Allen Hamilton, McLean, Va.; Edwards and Kelcey, Morristown, N.J.; JDA Aviation Solutions, Washington, D.C.; Jerry Thompson & Associates, Forest Glen, Md.; RLM Software, Allston, Mass.; and Safety Net Solutions, Salem N.H.
