After The Bell Market Commentary
On Monday, a decline in oil prices was offset by disappointing earnings reports. Crude for December delivery traded as high as $55.67 a barrel in overnight trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, but the contract closed Monday at $54.54, down 63 cents. The Dow ended the day down 7.82 points at 9,749.99, climbing off a 9,708 intraday low. The Nasdaq Composite slid just 1.10 points, or 1,914.04 after falling as many as 10 points to 1,905 in earlier trade. The Standard & Poor's 500 dipped 0.94 points to 1,094.80.
