Emulex SMI-S HBA Provider Achieves SNIA Conformance

Emulex Showcases its SMI-S HBA Provider at Storage Networking World Fall 2004

ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 26, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- STORAGE NETWORKING WORLD, Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the market leader in Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) and a leading supplier of intelligent building blocks for next generation storage networking systems, today announced formal conformance of its Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) HBA Provider through the Storage Networking Industry Association Conformance Testing Program (SNIA-CTP) for SMI-S. This underscores Emulex's on-going leadership as the first and only HBA vendor to achieve such a milestone. Emulex is showcasing its SMI-S HBA Provider in the SNIA Interoperability and Solutions Demonstration Lab at this week's Storage Networking World conference (Area 400).

"Emulex has been at the forefront of driving the acceptance of an industry-standard, open approach to Storage Area Network (SAN) management and is working closely with its partners and customers to deploy SMI-S conformant products," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing, Emulex Corp. "The delivery of a conformant SMI-S HBA Provider by Emulex marks a major milestone for the industry as it paves the way for an end-to-end, all SMI-S based management of the entire storage path. Together with a host of storage industry leaders, the Emulex commitment to SMI-S will help accelerate the industry's adoption of SMI-S."

"SNIA's Conformance Testing Program has become a significant safeguard for interoperability, by ensuring that vendor implementations and interpretations of the SMI-S conform to one another, which in turn has fueled industry-wide implementation of SMI-S," said Ed von Adelung, Chairman of the SNIA Interoperability Committee. "Emulex was instrumental in validating the CTP test suite through active participation in Storage Management Initiative (SMI) Lab4 and SMI Lab5 programs. This has helped secure necessary support for the HBA Profile in SNIA-CTP Release 1.0.2.23 that was just recently defined and completed. This is a critical contribution as it elevates the Fibre Channel HBA as a mainstream SMI-S compliant device category."

The Emulex SMI-S HBA Provider is a native, SMI-S 1.0 conformant implementation operating across its entire family of LightPulse HBAs, on all major platforms, including 32- and 64-bit Windows and Linux , Solaris and HP-UX. Furthermore, it is fully backwards compatible with the entire installed based of Emulex HBAs, enabling today's SANs to benefit from tomorrow's advances. Emulex's unique firmware based HBA architecture, together with its SMI-S HBA Provider, offers customers an exceptional combination of investment protection and a seamless pathway to ongoing SMI-S compliance.

The Emulex HBA Provider also leverages the comprehensive management instrumentation built into the company's well-known HBAnyware centralized HBA management framework. The driver-based instrumentation and advanced management features of HBAnyware enable customers to leverage and extend the capabilities that SMI-S 1.0 defines. Emulex will enhance its offering by implementing extensions to the SMI-S models. As a result, the Emulex SMI-S HBA Provider offers an efficient and seamless way for SAN management partners to easily integrate advanced, in-depth management of Emulex HBAs natively.
