New Book Says: Develop Beacons, Not Leaders

STILLWATER, Okla., Oct. 28, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Like the mighty Titanic, Enron and Andersen were built so strong that God Himself could not sink them. But slamming into a giant corporate iceberg, it followed the Titanic down the drain. Taking this into perspective, John Mowen's new book, Beyond Leadership, argues that it is high time America develop beacons and not leaders. It identifies nine fundamental directives of the Beacon, which can be remembered through the acronym GREAT ROCK. It identifies principles not previously recognized by the leadership gurus, such as the importance of accepting responsibility, developing outstanding decision-making skills, and inspiring creativity.

Based upon ten years of research, the analysis of over a hundred books on leadership, and his own leadership experiences, John Mowen proposes that the answer lies in how leadership principles are taught. His thesis is that, because leaders can be good or bad, e.g., Churchill versus Hitler, we should seek to become beacons rather than leaders. Beacons responsibly inspire themselves and others to achieve noble goals that benefit not only their organizations but also society.

Beyond Leadership provides new insights into leadership by addressing ideas overlooked by leadership gurus such as the importance of sound decision making, creativity, and cultivating resources. Taking the creativity directive to heart, Mowen illustrates the book with his own digital images. In addition, original haikus link each image to the message. Through a succinct writing style and original art images and haikus, the nine directives can be remembered and used on a daily basis.
