Letters Paint Picture of World War II -- Author Weaves Soldier's Letters with Personal Anecdotes in New Book

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., Nov. 1, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- In a powerful new book by Laura A. Hoffman, she describes how two young people deeply in love faced the fierceness of World War II. Laura's War (now available through AuthorHouse), presents a unique view of the years that shaped "the greatest generation."

The author and her husband, Wayne, met while attending the University of Illinois. Like thousands of other young couples during World War II, they corresponded regularly after Wayne shipped out for service in the European Theater. Laura includes all of the letters Wayne wrote her and combines them with excerpts from his Army journal to provide a personal glimpse at life on two sides of the war.

After graduating from college, Laura accepted a job as a rookie reporter at a Virginia newspaper, where she worked throughout much of the war. She was also a Red Cross nurse's aide. She endured the pain of having Wayne away for nearly three years, and she anticipated each letter he wrote her, which were filled with declarations of love and musings about the meaning of the war.

Laura's War gives a true account of what it was like as a young professional woman who waited for her true love to come home. She also gives a captivating account of the experiences of a young soldier. Through his emotional letters and the grim details jotted in his field notebook, readers witness life on the home front during the conflict and watch as a young soldier develops into an effective officer and combat leader.

Praised by readers as a poignant reminder of difficult times and a sincere account of true love fighting to survive in a world at war, Laura's War is a rare glimpse inside history.

Hoffman, a Chicago native, currently lives in Southern California. She received an award from the Virginia Press Association and had stories published in the Washington Post. Her husband, Wayne, returned from the war to become a lawyer, entrepreneur and business executive for several large companies throughout the world.
