WHAT: The announcement of the winners of the annual Goldman Sachs
Foundation Prizes for Excellence in International Education
at the States Institute on International Education in
Washington, DC, on November 15-16.
The States Institute will convene teams from over 20 states
and national leaders in policy, business, education, and
philanthropy to address strategies to prepare students for
the interconnected world of the 21st century. The Institute,
cosponsored by the National Governors association and other
policy groups, will focus on ways to internationalize high
school reform and use technology to promote global
competence. A plenary session on national security policy
and world languages will feature Rep. Rush Holt, (D) New
Jersey; David S.C. Chu, Under Secretary of Defense for
Personnel and Readiness; and Michael Lemmon, Dean, School
of Languages Studies, U.S. Department of State.
The Goldman Sachs Foundation Prizes for Excellence in
International Education will be presented on Tuesday
evening, and feature speeches by former Michigan Governor
John Engler. James B. Hunt, former Governor of North Carolina
and Kurt Landgraf, President, Educational Testing Service;
Vishakha Desai, President, Asia Society; and Stephanie
Bell-Rose, President, The Goldman Sachs Foundation
WHY: As the world has been made smaller by technology, and
national and regional economies have become more
interdependent, US students will need a far greater awareness
and understanding of world cultures, the ability to
communicate across national and regional boundaries and the
capacity to work with others who bring with them differing
cultural perspectives. Nationwide, schools are developing
innovative programs to teach about global issues. The
Goldman Sachs prizes recognize these efforts while the
States Institute serves to galvanize leaders to take actions
to scale these models up.
WHO: Event hosted by Asia Society, America's leading institution
dedicated to fostering understanding of Asia and
communication between Americans and the peoples of Asia
and the Pacific, and The Goldman Sachs Foundation, whose
mission is to promote excellence and innovation in education
and to improve the academic performance and lifelong
productivity of young people worldwide.
WHEN: The opening session will begin at 2pm on November 15. The
Goldman Sachs prizes presentation will occur from 8:15pm
until 9:20pm on November 16.
