 StockPickReport Commentary

Y'all, I have a confession to make.

It's not that big of a deal. I'm sure you've heard worse. Some of you may even be able to claim the same weakness.

Here goes...

I like to play cards. Blackjack, Poker, or Pitch. I love them all. (Emphasis on Poker!) And, as a member of the "hairier sex", testosterone-fueled instincts drive me to WANT to compete when I play. Not just play, but COMPETE.

Today I received a phone call from an interesting woman I'll refer to as, Sandy. In that phone call we discussed some of the hardships of trading. I listened while she described her love of trading. Sandy let me know that she was confident in her ability as a trader.

I am dubious of a trader's chances for the long run when they describe to me -- with the sort of self-assured tone as Sandy did today -- their feeling that it will be a profitable venture for them. But... ...and this is a BIG "but"...

When I mentioned my disdain for the casino-like atmosphere created by CNBC and other "financial news" (notice my use of quotes, please) channels, Sandy told me that she put her TV in her bedroom so she could THINK about her trading.

It is with THAT attitude that I believe a trader like Sandy can succeed. You see, the stock market is sometimes likened to a casino. I disagree. If the correlation is based on both casinos and stock markets having a degree of luck associated with them, I believe that is where the connection should end.

A casino is filled with a lot of music, clanking noises, lights, and shouting. However, you can trade in the QUIET of your living room. You don't HAVE to trade in a room full of screaming brokers and emotionally-charged "analysts" spewing out their "take" on the market. ...UNLESS YOU CHOOSE THAT ROUTE.

So, yeah, CNBC is like a Casino. But you can CHANGE that dynamic and turn that stuff off like Sandy.

Oh yeah, back to poker! See, another misperception about stock trading is that it is like a game of chance and skill like poker. However, unlike poker (where competition is the purpose), stock trading is something you do NOT have to COMPETE at.

And, that's a hard concept for a guy like me. I LIKE to compete. Women are often referred to as "emotional" and men as "logical", but look at ANY daytrader -- man OR woman. EMOTION often will consume them.

And that emotional consumption is the downfall of so many potentially good traders. See, traders do not have to be emotional, and they do not have to surround themselves with the flashing lights and noise of CNBC. It makes no sense to throw logic out the window in place of the titillation of the boob-tube.

But, then again, I guess there's a lot of things people choose to do that make no sense.

Anyone for friendly game of poker?
