COSTA MESA, Calif., Nov. 15, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) (www.cdg.org) today congratulated Telstra, Australia's leading telecommunications and information services company, on the carrier's deployment of CDMA2000(r) 1xEV-DO high-speed data services in major cities and selected regions across Australia. Telstra joins 16 other CDMA2000 carriers who have commercially launched 1xEV-DO in 13 countries on five continents.
"CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is the most advanced 3G wireless data technology deployed today, delivering a broad range of multimedia services to consumers and new revenue opportunities for operators," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "We see tremendous momentum in the number of deployments and user adoption of 1xEV-DO. Millions are already using the services today and we anticipate that more than 40 percent of CDMA2000 subscribers will be accessing them within four years."
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is a data-optimized technology and delivers data speeds up to 2.4 Mbps. In commercial networks, it supports average speeds of 300-600 kbps, the highest data rates of any commercial technology. Subscribers with a compatible device such as a PDA or a PC card or modem used with a laptop or desktop computer, can wirelessly access the Internet, download videos and music, view TV programs and send video messages.
Today, 17 operators offer commercial CDMA2000 1xEV-DO services, 15 more are deploying it and four are conducting trials across Asia, Australia, Europe, North and Latin America. SK Telecom first deployed CDMA2000 1xEV-DO in Korea in January 2002. Since then KT Freetel also in Korea, Vesper and Vivo in Brazil, SmartCom in Chile, Eurotel Praha in the Czech Republic, BellSouth Guatemala, PT Wireless Indonesia, Pelephone Communications LTD in Israel, KDDI in Japan, Telemobil in Romania, Asia Pacific Broadband Wireless Communications (APBWC) in Taiwan, Alaska Communications Systems (ACS) and Verizon Wireless in the United States, Telecom New Zealand and Telstra in Australia have launched 1xEV-DO services.
The technology is being deployed by both CDMA2000 1X as well as Greenfield operators. CDMA2000 1X operators are upgrading their networks to provide new services and an improved end-user experience while a number of Greenfield operators have deployed it to offer DSL-compatible broadband access to the Internet.
