Second Chances and Uncontrollable Romances -- Author Explores Love's Strange Ways in New Novel

SADDLE RIVER, N.J., Nov. 17, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- An older married woman gets a second lease on life in the arms of younger man, which leads to complications years later in the multigenerational romance novel, Kick the Chandelier (now available through AuthorHouse), by Gail Theis.

Laura Steele Pendleton has just retired at the age of 54 from her demanding career as a biochemist. She finds adjusting to life as a wife and grandmother a little boring, so she joins a committee with her best friend, Georgia Carrington, to plan a gala charity ball in New York. After all of her work, her husband, Amos, is too busy to attend, which leaves her without an escort to the ball. That is until she meets the dashing British actor, John Langston. A great admirer of his films, Laura finds herself quickly falling for the attentive, romantic thespian despite being more than a decade his senior. Although her commitment to her husband and family conflicts with her feelings, she stumbles into an affair with John.

Their brief romance soon develops into love, and John implores her to leave her husband, marry him and move to England. She is afraid to lose her current relationships, especially with her young grandson, Michael, but decides to take the chance on a new life. Once in England, Laura makes the miraculous discovery that she is pregnant with twins. However, the happiness is dampened by a rift with her daughter, Karen. Almost two years pass before the twins, Troy and Criseyde, meet Michael. The novel follows Laura as her children grow, and eventually become good friends with Michael. Difficulties come full circle as Troy, Criseyde and Michael enter adulthood, and inappropriate relationships threaten the bridges Laura has formed between her first and second families.

A story of heartache, second chances and love's strong allure, Kick the Chandelier is a steamy romance novel that crosses generations and challenges social norms as it travels from the urban excitement of New York to the quaint English countryside and the wilds of the Maine woods.

Theis studied science and literature at Cornell University before earning her doctorate in biology from the University of Pennsylvania. For more than 20 years, she has enjoyed a successful career in academic medical research and laboratory science. After retirement, she returned to literature and studied fiction writing at the New School University in New York. Kick the Chandelier is her debut novel.
