Photo Release -- The Port of Houston Authority Celebrates 90th Anniversary of Houston Ship Channel


ADVISORY, Nov. 17, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Port of Houston Authority (PHA) celebrated the 90th anniversary of the opening of the Houston Ship Channel with during a ceremony at the M/V Sam Houston visitors pavilion on Monday, November 15. The event was attended by more than 300 guests including the PHA commissioners and staff members, U.S. Congressman Gene Green, Harris County Judge Robert Eckels, Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia, City of Houston Mayor Pro Tem Carol Alvarado, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Colonel Steven P. Haustein, Museum of Cultural Arts Houston Director Reginald Adams, elected officials, PHA employees, customers, tenants, and other port neighbors and partners. Over a 90-year period, the Houston Ship Channel has become one of the nation's busiest waterways, providing a powerful regional and national economic engine, exquisite environmental resource, and vital trade link between the world and Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S. As the start of a year-long celebration, the event saluted the visionaries of the past and the leaders of today who have charted and maintained the course for the economic, environmental and commercial progress of this vast and marvelous navigational waterway. A permanent mosaic mural depicting the ship channel's 90-year history was unveiled and a reception was hosted during a tour of the waterway aboard the Spirit of Texas paddleboat.
