EMS Technologies Provides Fire Dept. of New York with Rugged SATCOM Terminals for Emergency Response

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 18, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- EMS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ELMG) announced today at the Emergency Response 2004 Exhibition & Conference, that the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is using EMS Technologies' Cyclone and Storm rugged mobile terminals to transmit video and voice communications between on-the-scene responders and headquarters locations.

The EMS hardware runs over Inmarsat through communications provider Stratos Global Corp. The terminals feature either a roof-top dome or a lightweight portable antenna, approximately the size of a laptop computer, to provide up to 128 kbps of throughput for Internet and e-mail access, fax, large file transfers, video conferencing and high-resolution image transfer. The terminals provide GAN (global area network) coverage worldwide, across all major land masses.

"EMS prides itself on providing first responders with rugged equipment capable of high-speed communications on the pause or in motion with no user intervention," said Dr. Neil Mackay, senior vice president and general manager, EMS's SATCOM Division. "Our Storm and Cyclone systems are ideal for users like the Fire Department of New York because there is no set up time and you can communicate while en route to a situation."

EMS already has its mobile SATCOM hardware in use by police and fire departments in the United Kingdom, and by the U.S. military for command-and-control applications on moving vehicles in Iraq, Afghanistan and other regions. In addition, Russia recently used the EMS terminals in a fire-fighting exercise at Moscow Airport.
