Bitfone Launches Open Source Interoperability Test Suite For Open Mobile Alliance

Conformance Test Tools Facilitate Industry Adoption of Standards-based Device Management

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif., Dec. 6, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Bitfone Corporation, the company that pioneered firmware over-the-air (FOTA) update technology for mobile phones, today announced the delivery of an open source interoperability test suite for device management and device synchronization on behalf of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). As the first administrator of the SyncML Conformance Test Suite (SCTS) Open Source Project, Bitfone will manage source code contributions and facilitate the widespread adoption of standards-based interoperability testing on behalf of the OMA members.

"Device management services using OMA-based specifications are becoming a high priority for carriers around the world, and interoperability testing is an important phase in the process," said Fred Harrison, Chair, OMA Board Interoperability Committee. "Bitfone has shown a strong commitment to supporting and enhancing OMA standards. Given their focus on interoperability and their high level of participation in associated OMA work groups, Bitfone is well-suited to administer the SCTS toolset."

"Bitfone has been a strong proponent of standards-based device management and we're excited to deliver an open source environment for interoperability testing, which we are using ourselves to verify conformance to OMA standards," said Bindu Rao, standards architect at Bitfone. "Having the OMA community involved in enhancing SCTS will enable rapid evolution of the toolset and test cases, accelerating adoption of interoperable device management solutions throughout the industry."

In July 2004, OMA made the decision to transition the SCTS from a proprietary code base to an open source environment. This move allows the SCTS source code to become available to a larger community, allowing for increased enhancements and provides momentum to the conformance tools ecosystem. In October, Bitfone responded to an OMA call for a program administrator and by November 30, 2004, Bitfone converted the original tool and established the SCTS open source environment on SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/oma-scts). The system is now generally available for developers and users.
